EYFS Reviews

An EYFS  review starts with you.  We will discuss what you wish to achieve from it and design the process around your needs.  This means we can be sure about what you want and need, and ensure that our work meets it.

It is a collaborative process and is NOT a 'done unto' event.  As such, we encourage that a member of your team is with us at every stage of the process and that he/she/they take an active part in it.  We want staff to feel empowered by the process and come out of it with a clear plan of what will happen next.  In fact, we often hear 'This is a coaching session, isn't it', which we feel sums up our approach.  However, we are there to 'challenge the accepted norm' if needs be but this is polite, friendly and professionally done.

A typical review looks like:

A Review involves -
  • A telephone conversation with a leader before visit to gain any information that may impact on the day
  • Introductory meeting with the Headteacher and EY Team before school starts the aim of which is to share any concerns about the visit and the outline of the day
  • The morning will be spent by me familiarising ourselves with the environment, the documentation, the team and the children.  If you are available to be part of this at any time, that would be useful.  Key to this is observing practice alone and alongside teachers, or Early Years Lead.  I have a format I use for this
  • The afternoon will be divided into two parts.  Firstly time spent with Head and EY Lead analysing data and any identified needs,  secondly an after school meeting involving the whole team for feedback and discussion

The aim of the day is to have a comprehensive view of the school and a joint vision of how to move forward.

We are however, mindful of how the school day works.  This plan is flexible as I appreciate the difficulties of releasing teachers and getting cover.

With regards to preparing for the visit, we always ask for the following could be available to inform the day –
  • A sample of Learning Journals from each class
  • The most recent EYFSP data – including GLD and how the ‘gap’ is being narrowed
  • Soft and hard data around achievement in Year One
  • Soft and hard data around vulnerable children, PP and SEND
  • Training and qualifications of the EYFS Team
  • Details of any schemes used in the EYFS, and their effectiveness
Written Review
  • The school will normally receive a written review within 10 working days of the visit. This review is subject to the approval of the school.

If you need any more information or have a question please don't hesitate to contact us at sales@backdropeducation.com or on 0333 344 1976.

'The day included productive discussions around SEN provision that was developmental and professional. Solutions were suggested based around lines of enquiry that were revisited throughout the day, including the debrief. This focus ensured clear and realistic targets could be set.'
